Mini-review: The House on Sorority Row

Maybe there’s something seriously wrong with me, but I really enjoyed this movie.

It’s another one of those early eighties high school/college horror schlockfests, similar to “Prom Night” or “The Prowler.” The girls of a sorority house do something bad and are subsequently stalked and slaughtered by a cane wielding maniac.

I like horror with a mystery element and “The House of Sorority Row” has it, though I guessed the twist early one. (I wasn’t 100% certain though, so the tension still simmered. Sometimes you watch a movie just to see if you’re right.)

At one point, the girls throw a party which features a band caught between Bad Company and Elvis Costello. It’s a nice document of that early eighties period when Hard Rock was giving way to New Wave. And the band wasn’t bad, though several of their songs seemed in search of a chorus.

The acting and dialogue were predictably hammy but got the job done. And I give extra points for a severed head that showed up in an unexpected location.

Someone should to a remake of this one; it could be a lot of fun.

(Ghaah! Waitasec. Some last minute research reveals it was remade as 2009’s “Sorority Row”. Looks like I just booked my afternoon on the couch.)
