So, just for funsies, I’m kicking off a new series of posts called—as you can see—“Did They Deserve to Die?” Each post will take a horror movie and ask the question about the doomed characters. This is not not to shock or provoke (well, not just), but to dig into the film’s themes and moral framework.
To be clear, the point isn’t whether *I* think the characters deserve to die (anyone who knows me knows I’m a font of endless goodwill). Rather, I’ll be asking whether—by the logic and moral code implied by the film itself—the various victims who are killed via axe, or chainsaw, or ice machine deserved their fate.
Each short post will break down the plot, explore the movie’s moral architecture, dig into a bit of thematic analysis, and then wrap it all up by answering the titular question. In particular, I’ll take a look at how the answer to the question has evolved over time. Who deserves to die in a 1970s movie is a lot different from now.
Stay tuned for the first one post in a few days.
