Review: Good Boy

Ever start playing with a dog and think it’s gonna be so much fun and after about five minutes you’re like, “This is kind of boring.”

That’s the horror film “Good Boy” in a nutshell.

I hate saying it. I loved the dog actor, Indy, (though there were a lot of supposedly terrifying moments where he just seemed kind of confused.) But the film just doesn’t hold your interest.

What is the plot? Yeah… what *is* the plot? I’m not really sure.

It’s something like this: A thirty-something man and his dog move into his grandfather’s creepy old house in the woods, despite numerous indications this is not a good idea. The dog rather quickly notices an evil, shadowy presence, but can’t alert his owner because dogs can’t speak. Things go from there, and soon weird mud creatures are slinking around in the dark.

There’s just not much here to sink your teeth into. You quickly realize the mystery behind these mysterious apparitions will never be explained, so you don’t have any sense of “I have to see what happens.” Things play out in a  predictable fashion.

It’s basically a gimmick movie. In the same way “The Blair Witch Project” asked, “What if all we saw was found footage?”, “Good Boy” asks, “What if everything was centered on the dog?”

The best that could come out of this is that Indy moves on to more prestigious projects. He deserves it.

He’s a good boy, after all.

I’m not not recommending this. If you like dogs, it may be worth a watch. But it could have been better.
