I’ve read several of Wieland’s books, which tend to operate in the space in between drama and horror.
In the Blackest Hour does as well, until into it falls into full on horror.
The plot has Rosemary’s Baby and Dead Zone vibes. Graphic designer Rennedi finds that her erratic and troubled twin sister has fallen for a mega millionaire. But things feel off and it’s slowly revealed that a Lucifer worshiping cult is in the mix.
Throughout the book, subtle hints are dropped that foreshadow the rising dread, in particular random people who walk up to Rennedi and deliver strange messages.
There’s a couple chuckles as well.
As always, Wieland’s prose is top notch. She delivers information with economy of words without being overly terse.
An easy five stars for me.
