Movie Review: Behind You

Occasionally movies pop up that I want to like. They may not be the greatest, but they seem like the passion projects of young filmmakers trying to get a foothold in the business. I imagine they maxed out their credit cards and took loans from rich uncles to get the project funded. As such, I’m rooting for them and inclined to grade on a curve.

“Behind You”, a ghost thriller from 2020, is one of those projects. It didn’t have a huge budget (though it gets by with what it had) and feels a bit unseasoned.

The plot is standard horror fare. Something happened in a house years ago (frankly, I never quite understood what.) Years later, two sisters move in with their aunt in that same house. There’s some kind of force at work, a demonic entity which takes possession of people, blah, blah, and blah.

The film actually reminded me a bit of the classic “Flowers in the Attic” series with its female focus and backstory about a family with secrets.

The acting was ok, though it mostly consisted of the characters forming frightened faces. The younger sister, in particular, was good. The music score was kind of the usual thing; it sounded like it might have been purchased from an online library. The camera work was shoddy and a bit confusing. The dialogue was very much in the vein of characters saying things to explain them to the viewer.

There was one pretty big plot hole—a character dies and then people are going on with their day like it wouldn’t matter. Obviously, this person would be reported missing and cops would show up, etc.

But, you know what? I basically enjoyed it. “Behind You” is certainly not a film you *have* to see, but you could do worse.
