Review: Last Shift

Yeah, y’all can go ahead and skip this one.

It came recommended to me on Facebook as being really scary. And it had a shot, but ultimately fell apart on landing.

The plot is intriguing. A rookie police woman capably played by Juliana Harkavy is tasked with taking the last shift—manning the phone, dealing with walk-ins—in a police precinct being shut down. She’s the only one in the building and pretty soon creepy things start happening. Through various narrative techniques, we find out that a year ago, a trio of cult killers in the vein of the Manson family were brought in after they committed a massacre. And let’s just say, they never left.

It’s not a bad premise. So why doesn’t it work? Well, for starters, the main character makes a ton of stupid decisions. In particular, she doesn’t seem very concerned with maintaining a hold on her gun. I’m pretty sure real cops who watch this are rolling their eyes.

At one point, when over a dozen chairs are mysteriously stacked upon each other in an instant, she comes to the conclusion that it’s all a prank, which just makes no sense.

In the last third, “Last Shift” descends into non stop jump “scares” and flashes of creepy faces. It ends on one of those “twists” I hate.

If I think about it, I could probably make the story make sense in my head, but it’s not worth the effort.

Better luck next time, folks.

Best line: “There’s so much blood splashing around in there… make a couple holes and it just pours out.”

Wait… WTF? Some last-minute research reveals that this movie has a hundred percent from movie reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes?

That… is… insane.
